Should write public note of my linux (mis)adventure
Spec: 16GB ram, RTX 2026, MSI laptop
Use case: Heavily on gaming (mostly indie and not too demanding graphic), Using it for work (digital art)
What i have use before December 2025
My MSI laptop hate linux mint and Zorin OS as it take long time to boot and most game somehow didn't work. Sometimes i have problem installing WINE on mint. And after some usage it take long time to load apps. Ubuntu is kinda the same-ish but has better gaming result but not by much.
But some reason Ubuntu budgie and kubuntu somehow work with a lot of things i need and can run most game thay i try with a few exceptions. Although i didn't play graphic intensive game.
Ubuntu budgie notes
- work well on my Ram16 GB RTX 2060
- Manually install WINE and flatpak (sai2 work correctly with pen pressure working)
Art specific apps
- Fire alpaca app image however is wonky and has weird line.
- XP pen deb package install normally and work normally
- Krita will lag when you insert a reference sheet or move a layer around, but it's not unusable, but it's noticeable to be annoying sometimes.
Game I tested
- No man sky, Running with no problem out of box
- Reverse 1999 need to change to proton GE else it freezes and patch downloading screen. Once using proton GE it's can play as normal but it take of loading when you change menu. Like around 10 sec or so.
- Crime scene cleaner sims, Not working out of box. It can load into level fine but as soon as you move around it freeze. I remember changing proton versions. Using GE seem to make it work normally without lag or freeze.
- Abiotic factor will freeze and often crash. First time changing to different proton seem work but once you change it to window mode it refuse to open and crashes. 2nd time changing to proton GE will load and walk around a bit fine until the weather change and that is when it's crashes.
- Minecraft is laggy but not unplayable, I remember getting like 20-30 fps if I use shader, If I use potato shader then it's around 30-40 fps. But of course, I think it also depends on what modpacks you use.
Nobara (official modified KDE) notes
- WINE, Flatpak Steam + Lutris + Heroic launcher pre-install
- First time booting everything lag af but after rebooting thing run normal and smooth. First time opening any program will be laggy, but once you close and re-open it, It's load faster and more responsive. Yeah it seem to be the case of game too.
- Take longer time to download and install flatpak but aside from that it's run normally and use less time to load and open, while Ubuntu budgie take less time to install but longer time to open that app.
Art specific apps
- Trouble installing Xp pen driver rpm, Use sh from tar. version to install and thing work normally
- Sai2 and Fire alpaca pen pressure didnt work properly (Fire alpaca from what i know is it doesnt like wayland sai2 on other hand idk.)
- Krita on wayland run really well and it doesnt randomly lag like on ubuntu budgie. ( not unusable ) but when you open file or move layer around it will lag and it's noticeable.
Game that i tested so far
- Abiotic factor, Work out of box, doesn't crash
- Limbus Company, Work out of box
- Reverse 1999, Work out of box
- Crime scene cleaner sim, Work out of box
- Minecraft using Prism launcher take LONG TIME to load but also that might be because of my internet connection, Performance is slightly better. But noticeably faster when using miniature shader if we compare when I run it on Nobara vs Ubuntu budgie.
- WitchFire Almost run perfect out of the box, I have minor inconvenient with game not recognized my keyboard. I go to the setting and 'rebind' the key with the same key but type with my keyboard. The game it recognized it even if it appears “…” when rebind the key. Aside from that, no issue. Run smoothly as it could be.

- American truck sim, Similar problem with Witch fire. Fix by moving English keyboard at the top of the layout list, Still horrible performance tho like maybe 20 framerate >_> Changing it to run with Proton GE improve it by a lot but still slight stutter here and there but not too bad.
What I noticed is shader compile MUCH faster than Ubuntu. If you have trouble with game not recognized your keyboard, changing to make English layout at the top of keyboard will solve it.
